Defense Attorney Omar Figueroa’s Inspirational Words for Pot Bustees
These amazing and inspirational words were offered by renowned Sonoma County-based marijuana criminal defense attorney Omar Figueroa as he sat on a panel of marijuana attorneys at the 2007 Seattle Hemp Fest:
You can’t have faith in judges, but you can have faith in juries, and you are the jury. You have to show up to jury duty, and you have to nullify…Do you know that you have the power to judge the law as well as the facts? It’s unquestioned. The United States Supreme Court says that this is a power, but it’s not a right, and that’s why the lawyers can’t tell you about your power to judge an unjust law while we’re giving our summation, our closing argument. We can’t tell you about it in court, but we sure can tell you about it outside of court.
You are the judges and you do have the power! I do believe in the justice system, because I believe in juries. I don’t believe in judges having the “cajones” to do the right thing, but I do believe that jurors can stand up, and it’s your duty to show up to jury duty.
